Notes from Drama Films; (CLIPS)

  • High angle shot up onto a person/object to suggest vulnerability.

  • Low angle shot onto a person/object to suggest power, strength and dominance.

  • Long shot of a person on their own, to suggest vulnerability and loneliness.

  • Point of view shot to suggest that someone is watching something e.g. a person.

Accompaniment from drama films; (CLIPS)
  • Music which adds emotion to the scene, e.g. slow sad music to help create a sad atmosphere.

  • Contrasting music to the action which is occurring on screen

Clip 1 - The Shawshank Redemption, 1994

The opening accompaniment has inspired me to open my drama film in a similar way. I think that the opening accompaniment to a film is extremely important as it helps to set the scene. The sadness and emotional values of the track shows the audience that there is already a tragedy occurring in the film. For example, this film is set in a prison which isn't a nice place to be. It portrays the sadness and even guilt the new prisoners feel as they are coming into the prison for the first time to begin their sentence.

Clip 2 - The Departed, 2006

The opening accompaniment to this film contrasts to the opening clip from the film 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Besides both films opening in a prison, they both portray a different feel to the other. The accompaniment used for this clip creates a contrast to what is actually happening in the scene as a character has just gone into prison. However, as this character is going into the prison undercover, the sadness and guilty element of the character's feelings don't come into consideration. Instead, the character is just doing a job whilst in the first clip, the characters in the prison van were entering prison for real and may feel the sadness and guilt as they are no longer free to live their lives.

Ideas to include in my film;

  • Twist
  • Betrayal
  • Crime
  • Action
  • Cliff-hanger ending
  • Emotional connection with the audience

Accompaniment Ideas

  • Slow sad type music to match with the sadness happening on screen to emotionally attach the audience.
